An acoustic that rocks

The short and sweet version is: the CK047 is a good guitar under any measure; I added the iDea retrofit preamp, and now I have MP3 recording (high quality) and playback (great for jamming!) right on the guitar. I have played for 20 years, and owned a few guitars. I believe I can notice subtleties that differentiate good guitars from plain average. In fact, I went to the store to check an Ovation iDea, but was immediately disappointed... I had never seen a $600 guitar so poorly finished, as the iDea was (what a flop, Ovation, what a flop...) Anyway, that is when I discovered the CK047. I compared the CK047 against a dozen other guitars on the store. The acoustic sound is superior to many brands. This guitar, however, does not have the best acoustic performance; for instance, Taylor is far superior to Ovation... But when it comes to plugged sound, nothing beats an Ovation. Koa wood gives a rich sound that is not very bright (something totally desirable when you amplify). I bought this guitar as a practice instrument for normal wear and tear, while I keep the high-end guitars for recording and occasional jamming. The tuning pegs are standard Ovation (very precise, keeps it tuned). The finish on the top is very well done; incredibly beautiful, and honors the natural warmth of the wood. This guitar is *very* precise: the first harmonic on every fret matches perfectly the note 12 frets below. The action is low and smooth. Now, a note about origin, as it seems to be a matter of interest: The CK047 is Korean. It does not have the aura that accompanies American-made guitars, but the finish is just as high-quality as you would expect from an American guitar (clarification: Celebrities are mid-level models; only high-end models are made in the USA... had I had extra$1,000 I would have bought an American Ovation). Ovation has been making guitars in Korea for a while, and it shows. I compared this guitar against other Chinese celebrities (the koa Celebrity is only made in Korea, though), and I have to acknowledge that Chinese models' finish is of the lowest quality. Warning: AS OF 2008, STAY AWAY FROM CHINESE OVATION CELEBRITY MODELS... they are hit or miss (mostly miss). Out of six Chinese Ovation Celebrity guitars I compared against the CK047, only one had decent finishing and sound. No doubt the quality will eventually increase, but in the meantime...

Excellent and expressive instrument

I've had this guitar for about a year now and definitely have enjoyed it every time I pick up and play. The sound quality is clear and bright, and the playability is easy/fast and precise intonation wise. Physical quality is good too as thus far no frets show signs of wear, the fingerboard hasn't scratched, and no warp-age has ever occurred.Obviously, the defining aspect of this guitar is the koa top. This is not only an attractive looking tonewood, it focuses the tone toward the brighter midrange for some clear and precise playing. There certainly is a good deal of high range presence, but it has a warmer quality to it than the sparkle and shine of spruce topped guitars. The low range of this guitar is significantly less pronounced than you would expect from spruce, but as a result you get a much more focused sound. This can also come in handy when amplifying this instrument, as it has tended to have less boomy feedback than my other spruce top ovations. The preamp is solid, with all the usual switches and sliders you would expect from Ovation. The onboard tuner is actually alright in the pinch too. You can amplify this instrument via a DI box or the like, but I would recommend some chorus to fatten up the sound from the piezo pickup. Otherwise, pluging into a chorus acoustic amp will get you those crystalline glassy tones.I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone who values precision in their chord and melody (or chord-melody) playing. You can hear individual notes well in chords, a quality typical of higher end instruments. It also functions as a great accompaniment to voice, as the tone stays nice and tight. I wouldn't recommend this guitar to a flatpicker/bluegrass player or a country player since it really doesn't have that Martin-y sound you expect in those genres, like a big boomy bass and shiny-sparkly twang. I would also recommend getting a luteh0le if you really want to tighten up the sound and limit unwanted feedback. Plus they look really hot on this koa topped guitar. Also high quality coated strings will really get this guitar singing.

If only it played like it looked

I just traded up this guitar on a Taylor , don't get me wrong , it is a beautiful looking guitar and the Koa wood really sets it off and plugged in this guitar is plugged in it can compete with guitars that cost twice the pricesadly when unplugged us when thing fall apart , the strings seemd to snap rather than strum and I just didn't like the sound of the plastic back when unplugged , although I have to say it is a beautiful guitar for fingerpickingMy point is I paid about 750 for this and for 750 you could buy a cheap Martin sans electronics or a low end acoustic Taylor that would blow this guitar out of the waterI am a firm beliver that you cannot make a good low end guitar with a plastic back , wood is the way to go in my humble opinion now if I played a 3000 dollar Ovation I am sure I would change my mind , but at this price I stand by what I said
