Steampunk Airships? Sign me up.

I demoed Leviathans at Gen-Con 2011 and have been waiting for its street date ever since. The game is fun out of the box with fantastic minis and great art. Using the quick start rules I taught a group to play the basic game in under 10 minutes and we spent a couple of hours having a great time playing multiple games. Later in the week a friend with a love for tactical combat came over and we spent 4 hours with a single battle, carefully maneuvering and taking advantage of the advanced rules (including some found on the game's website). While $99.99 is a steep price for a board game the quality of the product and the repeatability of play make it money well spent.

My New Favorite

The Leviathans board game was a long awaited one for me and one worthwhile. There's only a few things that some might find problematic - its cost is a bit prohibitive ($100 most places) but the box contents are above and beyond other board games. The minis are fantastically detailed and the dry-erase cards for each ship are a simple yet brilliant way to track battle damage. The minis themselves might be considered problematic if, like me, you have a 10 year old son at home who just wants to fly them around the house. Their spindly, plastic rigging is prone to breakage with that sort of handling. Alas, the first person to break off an antenna mast was me. The rules book, as thorough as it is, is also a bit daunting. I'd like there to be a few more examples as your read about Damage Arcs (such as an brief "here's what this represents in real life) for example, instead of having to pore through their sample battle scenarios and put together what you read. However, just as I read in one forum, it's true that you'll get the hang of it pretty easily. It's a simpler game to play than I first expected.What you're left with is a beautiful, steampunk-dirigible naval battle game that's got some fine strategy as its core. I'm eager to play again and not go rushing into the thick of things with my biggest ship like I did last time. Instead of hit points slowly wearing your ship down, but in no other way affecting you, the slots of your ship that hold particular equipment (gun batteries, crew, armor) are slowly destroyed, increasing the chances for a "Breaking the Keel" shot that takes you out of the sky. You can find yourself with your starboard side shot up and having to maneuver to bring around your port side guns. Or, bring up another ship to screen your damaged and immobilized prize behemoth while you try to enact some repairs. Engines out? Can't move. Steering Gear damaged? You turn slower to that side. Ship is near its end? Look up the ramming rules.I like it a lot.

Very Expensive, but nicely done and fun to play

This is essentially a sea battle wargame from the pre-dreadnought era (prior to WWI). The twist is that in this alternate history, they found a way to make their ships fly. On the positive side, there is much imaginative history that I quite like reading. The rules are (in the main) well thought out and imaginative. The miniatures are beautiful and pretty well painted, but somewhat delicate. It's fortunate they've provided a very good carry system in the box. This isn't a game to refight Jutland (or the flying predreadnought equivalent). The rules lend themselves to smaller fleets, which is good because you don't really get a lot of ships. All the materials are well made and attractive.Ok, so what is bad about the game? First some of the rules are complicated, like the battleship firing arcs and especially torpedoes. They're way too powerful and too hard to use and they slow down the game when it should remain fast paced. Also having only two boards means games are restricted to a very small space which you're not allowed to leave. Battletech boards work very well as substitutes and terrain is only for attractiveness since you're in the air above them so any kind of terrain on the boards is ok.So it's expensive, there are a few difficult rules,too restricted a play space, and not many models. But there are so few games these days that have this much potential. I think it's worth the price.
