5One of the best guitars I've ever picked up
By Matti_Ice
I have played bass for over 10 years for everything from church bands to death metal bands. I've performed and done studio work as a bass player. I used to preach nothing but 5 & 6 string basses (because of the extra range) but I started playing with a band who kind of followed the idea of Brain Drill (complex bass tapping lines mimicing the guitar) and I found the 6 stringer was just too big for my hands to quickly move the scales. I remembered seeing the band Skillet on stage with a Traben a few years ago and I was really impressed with the look and the sound. I did research on Traben and everything sounded great so I ordered this bass from Musicians Friend (when it was on sale for like $279.00)First, know that this is a professional grade bass! If you're buying this for a beginner, you are getting something that they can play all the way to whatever status they are trying to reach. It is also great for tone shaping so a pro would love to have this on hand for all their needs. The electronics are incredible. They sound great, have that huge punch but capable of being toned down for that dead sound. Response to both fingers and picks is very smooth. They are active but battery life seems to be normal to better than most. Tone, volume, and then your preamp. Perfect for doing minor adjustments. Usually I replace my pickups in every guitar but I don't want to ruin this sound by changing these. The only other guitar I've never changed pickups in is my D6 bass. The bridge is actually the tribal design so it is very strudy, which I like. I was surprised to find the body was made of bass wood and the neck of maple. The cheaper quality wood does not seem to affect the tone. I have basses made from much higher quality materials that don't come close to this one. There is a lot of contact between the neck and body which amplifies the tone and makes it unique. The guitar is very stripped down and streamlined so that it is not heavy, but has enough mass to make a BIG tone. Color options are a little limited, I'm not one for the satin black look, but it is still a beautiful instrument.I use this bass mainly for laying bass tracks in the studio now. It is great recording direct. The lightweight/big tone attribute makes it a perfect performance bass as well. If you're in the market for something that will continue to serve you and make your friends jealous I highly recommend this bass. I'm still amazed everytime I pick mine up and play it.

5Second to none!!!
By Lance A. Wood
I have the Traben Array 4, and let me tell you it is THE standard in Bass guitars. I have played others, and none come close. I could have gotten any bass on the market, but after playing a Traben, I was sold. Second to none!!

A timeless classic? The Phoenix is one of the land-mark, easy to recognize Traben designs. Easy to recognize visually and sonically, the Phoenix makes a HUGE statement. Flame inlays lapping up the neck and a brilliant chrome plated flame Bigger Bridge set the visual tone there is something big going down….. With Traben’s larger body design coupled with massive bridge to body contact the Phoenix more than holds down the sonic end of the equation. Make a statement!

2Beautiful, but trouble galore (kind of like my ex)
By Skibum
So, looking for a lefty bass is always challenging. But when I saw the Traben Phoenix, I thought my prayers were answered - it was a case of immediate lust. However, my lust soon turned to disgust after I received my bass. It arrived looking beautiful, but I immediately discovered that the pot that controls the blending of each pickup was non-functional. Hanser Music, the distributor of Traben, would not allow me to have the bass looked at locally (there is no dealer within several hundred miles) and required me to send it back to them. It took over six weeks for them to repair the bass and get it back to me (requiring my purchase of a back up bass to continue my instruction) - and lo and behold when I finally got it back, there was a terrible hum when I plugged it in. Deciding to eat the cost, rather than have another interminable delay, I took it to a local repair shop where I discovered that the bass was not properly grounded. It cost me $40 to have it repaired. I will note that after a lot of back and forth with Hanser, they did reimburse me the $40. Unfortunately, the story does not end there - soon thereafter, the same pickup pot stopped working. I opened up the bass and discovered a very poorly soldered wire on the pot. I resoldered it myself and since them, the bass works properly. While my Traben bass does look wonderful and sounds great, no one should have to worry about purchasing a new $600 instrument and having to deal with multiple problems necessitating the expenditure of much time and trouble. Traben manufactures the Phoenix in Korea and it appears that the quality control is very poor both in Korea and here in the US. While Hanser's customer service is very pleasant, it shouldn't have been that hard to check out the bass before both initial shipment to the dealer and before returning a defective product to the consumer. I would not recommend purchasing a Traben bass unless you have a local dealer who is prepared to stand behind the product.

5Great Bass
By B. Castro
I Bought the lefty model about a year ago and it plays as good as it did the day i got it to this day. the bigger bridge gives more body contact and sustain, and it has standard holes for the strings and notches directly on the bridge for you to choose from. The five Piece neck is Beautiful, and the body curves down to the neck so it doesn't even feel like a bolt-on. the range is unbelievable, lows, mids, and highs all sound great. All the little details are what make this bass so nice, sleek body shape, the curve down where the neck bolts on, a Brass nut, the Flame inlays, and Active pickups as well. the only downsides are that it is a little on the weighty side, playing a long set can be a real workout with this baby, and it looks so amazing that when people see you pull it out they expect to be blown away so you had better be able to deliver. i got mine for 500 and it was worth every penny and much much more.

4Good ears for the price
By Lehualani K. Concepcion
I bought these cow ears for my 10-month-old labrador retriever. They are a lower-calorie and lower-fat alternative when compared with pig's ears. My dog loves them! Some of them are larger than others, and they are not huge, but the majority of them are good-sized. They may not be as big as the ones I get at the pet store, but I pay 50% to 100% more for those than I did for these. I think that for the price, they were excellent.

1Just don't like it
By C. Flores
I was (and still am) looking for a stylish, sleek, leather laptop bag that I can wear as a backpack since I take the bus and walk to work. I find that over the shoulder bags tend to put to much strain on just one shoulder, so am opting for a business type backpack. From the picture this bag looks sleek and stylish. When I actually got it, its huge! It's clunky, forget about getting anything out of it quickly, like money, wallet, phone, id...anything. There are no exterior (quick to access) pockets. This means you have to actually take it off, turn it around, undo the outside clasp, then open the akward, tall pockets in the bag, while making sure nothing else falls out. Simply put, I hate it! This bag might be what other people are looking for, but for me it's simply too big and cumbersome. On top of everything else, the backpack straps are connected to the bag with metal loops on an extended flap. This causes the bag to hang away from your back. If you're ever on the bus, busy city streets, or busy conference centers, you will definitely be hitting people with this bag. To recap...I hate it!

5Simply Wonderful!
By T. Foster
When I purchased this backpack for my laptop, I was unsure whether it would accommodate my lap top. The dimensions on the page said that it would fit up to a 15" screen lap top. Well I have Dell Inspiron with a 17" screen, and it fits. It is snug, but it works. It has three separate compartments; for your laptop, files and miscellaneous items, and all of you adaptors and things that you use along with your computer. There is also a make-up bag attached also. The bag appears to be sewn together well. The straps are comfortable and the pink and black is so cute. Overall, I have no complaints. I love it.

I like the look of this but it was huge!! I showed it to my friend and she thought it was a backpack with wheels. The design is very attractive but too big. I had to return it.

3Good set features, but not the quality. Or am I just unlucky with it?
By 6x9
I have been recently forced by Pentax to buy this flash to complement my new K10D.I already had AF500FTZ and a few other Pentax TTL flashes which worked perfectly well with my *istDs, but for some reason Pentax decided not to support plain TTL any more in the new K10D body.My AF540FGZ broke almost immediately - when I turned it on the zoom was stuck in manual mode @ 16 mm. A brand new flash! If you look in the Internet, you will find out that it is not just a single isolated case, but a well-known bug. I would consider this to be a design/manufacturing issue. The door of the battery compartment is not easy to open. Moreover, its locks are somewhere in the middle part of the door, the door is rather long and the material it is made of is not strong enough. When you put batteries in, the edges of the battery compartment door are pushed out. Not a critical issue, but product engineering should have considered this.I own plenty of Pentax stuff which I am really happy with. Pentax quality used to be outstanding. So, this is my first bad experience. VERY dissapointed. From the positive side, I liked the wireless functionality and the fact that 540 can be operated by the built-in flash of my K10D (no additional master flash is required).+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++UPDATE: Pentax USA have sent me the International Warranty Card for this flash - very good customer support.UPDATE 2: I have received my flash unit back, repaired. It took almost two months: it was sent out to Pentax on July 31 (received by Pentax on August 7), and I got it back from repair on September 28. Even if the return shipping from repair took a few days, this is still much longer than stated on Pentax web site (15 - 20 working days). Just FYI.

4A lot of functionality in a camera mounted flash . . . but
By Donald G. Fraser
I've owned this unit since March 07 and have used it sparingly. The performance to date is as advertised and impressive for a camera mounted flash unit. However, the mounting arrangement incorporates a metal spring loaded 'lock pin' which fits into a receptor hole in the camera hot-shoe. The metal pin is pushed into the flash base by a cam on the tightening ring acting on a very small diameter plastic pin. If this plastic plunger pin breaks off, and it did, the flash unit stays locked to the camera hot-shoe. A very flimsy arrangement that can cause a lot of grief, inconvenience and possible hot-shoe damage. Disappointing Pentax.

2this flash is not worthy to sit atop a Pentax K20D
By William Porter
I am a part-time wedding/event photographer who uses Pentax system (as of summer 2008 I have a K20D, K10D and an *ist DS). I own two Pentax AF540 FGZ units and my experience with both of them is decidedly mixed. The new Pentax K20D is one of the best cameras avaialable today for any price. The Pentax 540 FGZ flash, on the other hand, is old, badly designed and badly built. It's not worthy to sit atop the K20D.I've encountered three problems with these units. If you search the Internet you will discover that these complaints are not uncommon.First, I've had problems with build quality on both of my units. I purchased my first 540 FGZ in 2007. After only one or two events, the auto-zoom motor stuck. Flash had to be sent back to Pentax repair in Colorado, which kept it for a full month. While the first unit was being repaired, I purchased a second unit. (NOTE: I needed this anyway so I don't complain about the second purchase.) After only a few events, the new unit got stuck on my K20D and could not be removed normally. Like the problem with the auto-zoom motor, this problem (with the flash getting stuck) is well known. Armed with info from the 'net, I was able to take the flash apart while it was still attached to the camera, take out the locking pin that is the cause of the problem, and remove the unit from my camera. If you visit pentaxforums.com you will be able to find the post in which I describe this process in detail. I have left the locking pin off the camera. The flash works without the locking pin although it becomes necessary for me to think while I'm shooting to make sure the unit remains firmly mounted in the hot shoe. Finally, my first unit - which had been behaving itself for many months - also got stuck in my camera, and I had to do the same thing.I hasten to add that I handle my camera equipment VERY carefully. THe K10D/K20D bodies are very well built. The 540FGZ simply is not, and there seem to be design flaws in the hardware as well. Then there is the whole problem of P-TTL, Pentax's proprietary flash exposure system. These problems are harder to describe but they're worth mentioning. The preflash that P-TTL uses to measure exposure seems to have a marked tendency to cause subjects to blink. Equally bad, the exposure results are inconsistent. Without flash (using available light) I know my K20D so well I am confident of getting a good exposure nearly every time. Shooting with the flash, however, this isn't the case. If you practice a lot with the flash, you can get it to work pretty well most of the time. But the things I've read about Nikon's best flash units make me jealous. The Pentax 540 FGZ is also not as strong as some of the units available for Canon and Nikon cameras. There is only +1 EV available - possibly not enough power to take wedding formals in front of an altar where there's strong back lighting. I now use both units and get better results - but that should not be necessary. My next flash will be a Metz unit and I hope it works better than the Pentax 540.On the plus side - and to explain why I give the unit 2 stars rather than 1 - when it doesn't break, the 540 can be effective. The tilt-swivel head works really well. Although the users guide is very old (and unaware of either the K10D or the K20D) and very badly written, if you throw yourself at it, you can figure out how to get the flash to work well in wireless mode. Controls are easy to use once you've figured them out. And I have the optional battery pack which is indispensable if you're shooting an event and need to take hundreds of shots and want quickest recycle time.Bottom line, as I said before: Pentax makes GREAT cameras, but this flash unit is mediocre.
