Thule 847 Outrigger: An Extra Hand

I bought two of these, one for each side of my Honda van, with one going into the front crossbar and the other going into the back. I carry two kayaks with a Swiss Cargo double kayak carrier attached to Thule crossbars. I got these so I wouldn't have as much trouble lifting the kayaks in place, but since I am a not-so-strong woman, I'm still not really comfortable doing it alone yet, although it does make it much easier. It's also less likely that the kayak will mark up the car above the window area, which had happened previously while loading. It really is like having another hand available to support the weight, which is a big help. I will say that I've noticed that when a guy is lifting it on, they don't want to use them, but when my girlfriends and I are lifting them, we appreciate the support these provide. They don't feel super strong, but then they have never bent or dropped the kayak, either. What I really wish I could get is the Thule Hullavator, but I can't justify spending that kind of money right now. If I eventually get a tandem kayak, which would be heavier, I would probably need that to lift it up alone. Overall, I'm glad I purchased these as they do provide extra support when lifting.

I bought this one together with the Swagman Yakart Kayak Cart, and they work together well at a reasonable price. See my separate review for the cart.When I first bought the Kayak, they helped me load it on my minivan. Once we got home, my wife and I had quite some trouble to get it down and inside. I was wondering whether I could ever get it on the water. The cart and outrigger took care of the problem.The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that, it is sort of weak. I wouldn't use it alone to load my 75lb Hobie Odyssey. I cut a wood rod of 1.5x2, at the length from the Outrigger to the ground. Before I use the outrigger, I pull it out and tie the wood rod to the outer end, to give it the extra support. In addition to the strength (or lack of), I think it has a design flaw, that putting too much weight on the extended outrigger can cause problem for your roofrack as well.

My wife belongs to a ladies group called the Adventurous Woman, so she'll need to be able to load the kayak without my help. She has practiced with the Outrigger a couple of times and is able to load and unload her kayak all by herself (she's 5'4" and she loads it on an SUV). The only reason I did not give this a 5-star rating is because I feel the end could be a little more substantial to give more confidence in keeping the kayak from falling, but it works.
