4Size Does Matter
By Wally
From the first time I saw an X-QPACK case, I knew that I wanted one. A couple of weeks ago, the motherboard and/or CPU on my current tower pc died so I decided to build myself a replacement pc housed in an X-QPACK case. Overall, I really like the case. The size seems a bit bigger than in pictures from the internet. Some have compared the case to toaster oven size. The dimensions are 13.8" D x 11.2"W x 9" H. The case is made out of aluminum. Without components, the case may seem a bit on the flimsy side, but with components installed it seems sturdier. Two bonus items are a carrying handle and cpu/hd temperature displays. The manufacturer says the handle can carry up to 45 lbs. I didn't test carrying a loaded case with the handle alone. When I used the handle, I placed my other hand on the bottom for support and, with this method, there was no problem at all moving the case with components around. The temperature displays give a readout of the cpu and hard drive temperatures. According to the manual (found online only), one sensor gets taped to the heat sink, the other on the hard drive. Thus the temp on the heatsink is actually lower than of the cpu, but still the readouts are a nice bonus to have. Here are some of the major likes and dislikes I have of the X-QPACK case. Likes: 1) Compartmentlized organization (motherboard slides out from back of case, top area for installed hard disk in HD rack, and 5 1/4" drive and floppy bays, 2) 120 mm case fan along with slotted vent holes in front side of case are very efficient for cooling, 3) aluminum makes case lighter to carry and also aids in cooling, 4) the case just looks sharp. Dislikes: 1) PSU isn't too strong. The PSU is designed for Pentium 4 processors. I have an AMD processor. 2) PSU is of smaller dimension of regular sized ones. As a result, if one changes the PSU, if one has a longer-sized CD/DVD burner, this won't fit. The dimension of the case needs to be about an inch more in depth for larger sized burners to fit, 3) the cables to connect the USB, PWR Switch etc..are too long. They still fit in the case, but for such a small case, their lengths should have been shorter.Overall, I really like the case. If one likes a small form factor case and doesn't plan on opening and rearranging components around much, this is one that is tough to beat. The case looks cool and runs cool too. 4 out of 5 stars. If they could have made the case a bit more in depth to accomodate the longer sized CD/DVD burners (I wanted to install an internal burner with lightscribe features, but this drive didn't fit), I would have rated this 5 out of 5.Update: I did happen to find a lightscribe DVD burner which is small enough to fit inside the case at Best Buy. It is by LG electronics (model GSA-4166B). The dvd buner came with a version of Nero with lightscribe support. However, I had to go to Nero's website and do an update in order to get it to work. Plus, the Nero suite with that bundle didn't include some Nero programs I was used to. So, I ending up not using the bundled software and stuck to Nero 6.6 which I already had. Also, instead of Nero, I use a version of SureThing labeling software which supports Lightscribe. Now, I have the system I wanted in the first place: a cool looking Small Form Factor system which has a lightscribe DVD burner too!
