5Great Semi-Transparent Stain
By J. Davis
We put in a new cedar fence, arbor and storage cabinet. The wood was untreated and not stained. We didn't want stain that masked the woodgrain, so we read up on semi-transparent stains. After a lot of homework and looking at consumer reports, we decided this product was what we wanted. We searched Manhattan trying to find this stain. No luck. Manhattan doesn't have a lot of outdoor staining needs. We found this product on-line and bought it. In about 10 days we got the four one-gallon containers. The product is put on with a brush and not a roller. This takes longer then some other stains. But, that was the only draw-back. The product went on easy with a brush. The one trick we learned is that you should wash out your brush with paint-thinner now and then because the product builds up on your brush. If you wash out the brush after a section of fence (or deck), the stain goes on very, very easily. If you don't wash out the brush it takes longer. We are VERY happy with the end result. The fence, storage unit and arbor look great. The stain color is what we expected and you can definitely see through the stain and see the wood grain. We put on the stain in October 2007, and they say that it should last for about three years. We'll probably restain the fence in 2008 or 2009 to get a second coat on quicker so there's more of a barrier protecting the wood. The only other thing to report is that when it rained a week after putting on the stain, the water really bounced off the stain and it seems to be really working well so far. This really is a product for the homeowner wanting a "see-through" stain. It will mean restaining every two or three years, but it really looks better than staining with a non-transparent stain if that's the look you want.
