4Solid, well build DVD/CD Burner
By Cato Judicium
After researching the various external dvd burners on the market I decided to buy this Plextor model because of the brand's good reputation and also because this model came with the Nero software suite and not the Roxio software suite. I already had the Roxio software suite so I wanted a drive that came with Nero. So far this drive has worked flawlessly. I've burned cheap no name brand 8x DVD-R's with no problems, I've burned 16x Sony DVD-R's with great success and speed, I've burned Verbatim 4x DVD+R DL discs without any issues. The only thing you have to worry about is if you are planning on playing any of your DVD's on a set top player. My set top DVD player is a Sony DVPS 3000 that I purchased in 1996. Since this DVD player is so old it does not recognize any DVD-R or DVD+R media. DVD set top players made after the year 2000 do not seem to have these compatibility issues. This is no reflection on the Plextor DVD/CD burner. It burned perfectly good discs that work fine on newer set top DVD players including the DVD player in our car.

2Macintosh Compatible - Sort of
By B. Rodenborn
I'm sure this a fine DVD Writer for PC users, but the Plextor claim of compatibility with Macintosh is really very limited. You will need to run OS X.4 or higher if you want use the Macintosh Finder to burn discs. Even then, it doesn't work very well and fails on burns frequently. Plextor will tell you to spend $100 on Toast software. Well guess what, the price of this drive just doubled. I was also told both by Plextor and by Dantz who makes Retrospect software prior to buying it that this drive should work with Retrospect. It doesn't. Dantz has since said they are working on a fix, but when that will happen is uncertain. I called Plextor and their technician's solution was spend $100 on Toast and say it's my computers fault. My advice for Mac users is to stick with companies such as LaCie and Iomega that offer drivers and don't blame the Macintosh OS if there's a problem.

5Very good external drive
By D. Wilbur
Burns DVDs quickly, but it's imperative that you have a USB 2.0 port, which I did not when I purchased this. Once I installed the high speed USB port, things worked well.
