4short of "grand", but nonetheless a very good rabbet set
By Matthew Sutton
I had been coveting this set for some time before I just recently had a good reason to buy it--it is everything you could want in a set of rabbeting bits. The real luxury of this particular set is the sixteen bearing collars (from 1/16-1") that give you the flexibility to slip on the appropriate collar to achieve whatever depth rabbet you need. This is a helpful improvement over the old method of switching out the bearing itself where you were limited by the availability of bearings with different outside diameters (a lot of research would be necessary to find the size and/or supplier). With this system a pair of the standard 1/2" bearings sandwich a solid anodized aluminum (I think) collar of differing depth--you only need to remove the top one (or bottom depending on the orientation of the router), slip off the "donut" and replace it with another one of differnt size, sandwich it with the top bearing, and screw it all together with the hex screw. The nice thing about this is its speed--you can easily switch out the collar while the bit is in the router's collet. One rather small complaint would be that in some cases both bearings pull out with the collar--this happens more often if the collar has seen some use between changings--its annoying, but nonetheless simple to, replace the bottom bearing and washer; i'm not sure how this could be prevented design-wise--you want the fit to be sufficiently tight to eliminate any lateral slop (wobble) in the bits rotation. Sometimes the bearing gets stuck in the collar and can be stubborn to remove--I find using a sharpened pencil works best since it is soft enough to wedge into the bit and not risk damaging the inside of the collar or the supplied bearing. The included bit was somewhat larger than what I was anticipating. It is 2" in diameter, the cutter is an inch deep plus the depth of the collar/screw (3/4" ?): it is a large bit. I have only used this set with a 2 1/4hp Bosch and while it has performed perfectly well, I run it slow just to be safe and I creep up on a deep rabbets in two or three passes. The bit would probably be fine for my 1 1/2hp P/C router but I feel like it probably needs all the torque it can get.A very nice set. If the carbide is handled carefully, and the (aluminum collars don't get to badly dinged through dropping) this set should last a long time. Oh, and this is one of those odd cases where the plastic case is actually an improvement--it is durably constructed (real hinges, custom esterfoam liner) and mine looks as good as new.

4High cost, high reward
By Lawrence Matthew
After struggling to make precision rabbets on plywood, I set about looking for an undersized rabbeting bit set (as most people are aware, 1/4" ply isn't really 1/4", nor is 3/4" really 3/4") and I'm too impatient to fiddle with a shop jig. I couldn't find any except for this set and an Amana set, both about the same price. I decided to buy this one since it came with a full set of undersized rabbet bits as well as every other conceivable size I could ask for. The price is steep - about half the price of my router! But the cuts are really nice. I practiced on some scrap wood and then cut the real thing and they really are perfectly sized. I'll never have to worry about rabbeting again.I agree with the prior review that the bit itself is huge. You'll need a full sized router to run this and be sure to keep it on a slower speed. The router by itself is one of the more dangerous shop tools and with this thing attached it's downright deadly. Make sure everything is fully secure before turning it on. Also be really sure that the bit can spin within the router base without touching the sides of the opening. When I inserted this, I noticed that my base plate was slightly off and the bit hit up against it as I spun the bit with my fingers (with the router unplugged of course), so I had to tweak the base to fit the bit. Another downside is the bit doesn't fit with the vacuum attachment so I'm back to sweeping up router shreds again. The allen wrench and bearings that remove and secure the templates are tiny. I can envision these getting lost. Never fear -- the bag has the part number just in case you lose it. And I'm pretty sure I will.Four stars because for the life of me I don't know why the bit is this large. As a result, a lot of care has to be taken to ensure safe and proper operation (setting the base plate, low speed, can't' use the vacuum hose). But if you've got a big enough router and take caution, you'll find a really good set of rabbeting bits that will last a very long time with precision accuracy. I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend the set.

Great bit set for the price paid, I got it on sale or I never would have made the investment, works as advertised with clean cuts.
