3First pair of Snake Gaiters
By Land Lubber
The label on this product gives information about how they've been tested using "simulated" snake bites in which hypodermic type needles were used to try & penetrate the material. However, I actually found a video by another manufacturer in which a live demonstration was performed by a man dancing around live rattlesnakes and that was one impressive video as the snakes repeatedly struck and bit at the mans legs & boots. This particular pair also WARNS that they are to be used over "heavy boots."My current hiking shoes are not high tops (to the ankle) and thus, I'll probably have to get a new pair of boots before I feel comfortably safe since I have about an inch of open area between the bottom of my new gaiters and the tops of my trail shoes. Still, I figure I'm protected about 85% more than hiking without them because that video I mentioned by the other manufacturer demonstrated that most bites were directed at the shin region of one's leg. Some bites were directed at the mans shoes/boots.Also, you'll notice that the modeling of these gaiters is done without any tie downs even though the product has three grommets on its base for some type of tie down. Yet a third manufacturer DOES show its tie downs being used. All in all, I"ve looked at three gaiter types and don't see much difference and ended up buying the TurtleSkin product because they claimed it was lighter and cooler than other competing products. They are thin and stiff but appear tough & would resist tearing, cutting, or puncturing from my observation..... and as the first reviewer said, I hope they work when the time comes that I get an attack. I came within a 4 foot, very beefy rattler less than a year ago and it was within feet of me.At a minimum, they're good for protecting one's legs below the knee from sharp rocks and brush and probably would serve to keep onen's pants dryer in wet foilage.

3Good fabric, poor design, only one size.
By El Ojo Del Lobo
I've been wearing these gaiters in snake country for 3 years. I seem to average around 10-15 encounters with rattlesnakes per year.I really like the less rigid and light-weight fabric. I've yet to be hit by a snake, but it is just about impossible to push a needle through the fabric. I'm fairly confident that it would stop the fangs of a rattlesnake from penetrating. The fabric is not invincable, however, as I have torn it on barbed wire hidden in the weeds. Once a tear starts, it tends to continue tearing as the fabric is not a rip-stop weave. Since the gaiters are made from two layers of the fabric, you still have some protection if one layer is compromised. The design of the gaiter is poor at best. I've worn a number of different snow gaiters and all of them were much better designed to fit and stay put than these. Gaiters will ride up and leave you exposed if you do not tie them down. This gaiter has some small grommets where you can attach some cord and run it under your foot, but they are too small and located too far forward to be of much use. I have modified mine with larger grommets located further back. The gaiter should be equipped with a strap that runs under the instep as well as a hook to grab the boot laces (like most gaiters). The one positive thing about the design is that the zipper is a good one. Overall, these gaiters seem to have been designed by someone that never actually used them or subjected them to field testing. These gaiters are "One size fits all". I'm 5'9"/155 lbs. and fairly fit. When I bought the gaiters they were really too big, so I washed them and they shrunk quite a bit. I dried them on very low heat in my dryer. They now fit me pretty snuggly. If you are a big person, they certainly won't fit you if you let them shrink.I wish someone would combine this fabric with a well designed gaiter in 2-3 sizes. I've got to buy another pair soon and I'd sure like to find something better than these.
