2What you may not know about clocks - and it cost me
By J. Hall
The description clearly states that this clock has "German Quartz movement". I did not know what that meant. The clock is driven by a quartz crystal and NOT the pendulum. The pendulum does swing side to side - but that's all that the pendulum does. The pendulum on this clock is purely there for looks and *nothing else*. The pendulum swings a bit fast, too. I expected a gentle swaying. No luck. There is no "tick tock" noise accompanying the pendulum, because there is no escapement mechanism. I thought that I was buying a pendulum clock - and now you know better. This clock is basically a cheap-o digital "made in china" plastic wonder behind an analog face (and in a nice wood cabinet). The cabinet on the clock is very nice. The glass is real. However - if you open the nice glass door to attach the fakey-mcfake pendulum, the door will unbalance the clock and it will rotate on the wall! So, be careful when opening that door. Also, this clock requires two "C" cell batteries and - ouch - the batteries are NOT included. For the price, I expected batteries. I keep a stash of AA and AAA batteries handy, but who even uses "C" size batteries anymore? Now I am one of those people. The extra functions on this clock are nice: mute, choice of chimes, volume control. What's not nice at all is that you must access the control panel from the back, which means taking the clock off the wall every time you want to change a setting. There is a setting for the chimes to automatically stay off from the hours of 11pm to 6am. That's ... almost a nice feature, because my neighbors won't appreciate the loud chimes at 10pm or 7am when they are sleeping. I live in an apartment.Beneath the fancy faux exterior, when you flip the clock onto its back, you get to see the rather cheap underpinnings of this otherwise pretty clock. There is a cheap and tawdry plastic clock driving that lovely clock face! I was underwhelmed. This was my first "fancy" clock, previously being satisfied with whatever looked nicest at the local "Target" brand supermarket. Given my previous experience with $10-$25 dollar clocks, I considered this purchase rather extravagant. Overall, I thought that I was buying a Porsche, and then under the hood was this silly little four-banger engine. ***sigh***I cannot even complain, because assuredly this clock will keep accurate time. ***heavy sigh***The clock comes with directions, sort of. You get a half sheet with some basics on it. They omit to tell you how to assemble the pendulum. They omit to tell you that the batteries are "C" size. They do tell you not to push a certain button on the back.Like any "Kwality" product, this clock comes with a warranty. Two years, and you must pay $10 for shipping and handling - not YOUR shipping and handling costs, it's $10 for THEM to ship the clock back to you. Gee. Thanks?I rarely send a product back. I will not be sending this clock back. It is a fine looking clock that will keep accurate time. Yet, I feel quite heartsick and let down. This clock was an expensive education for me - about two days' pay spent on something that I would not have bought if I'd seen it in person. But now you know.

4Accurate and hassle free!
By Natureshots
Bought this clock to replace a Howard Miller Lancaster as I didn't want to have to wind the Howard Miller every week anymore. Aesthetically, this River City looks just as beautiful as the much more expensive (4X) Howard Miller that it replaces. Another reason I prefer this clock over a key wound clock is that it keeps accurate time, given that if one services a key wound clock enough, it will keep accurate time too. I like the adjustable chime volume and the nighttime mute option. However, even with the chime volume at the lowest setting, the chimes have managed to wake a sleeping baby on another floor level once, perhaps because of its high pitch. I also like the shallower depth of this clock, which may contribute to poorer chime quality. What I do miss about the Howard Miller when compared to this River City is that the Howard Miller has more pleasant, richer and deeper chimes; the electronic chimes of this River City's sounds, well, electronic. Lastly, it's purely a matter of preference but I also miss the tick tock sounds that this clock doesn't produce.

5Love This Clock
By Ginny S.
We really love this clock. It has a great look and sounds great. We did turn down the sound some since it is near our TV room. It's nice to have that option.
