2Could Have Been a 5
By RPG Lover
This kit does build the beginnings of a neat 4'x8' layout, and if you buy the two additional kits, additional tools and materials, and track it's all relatively simple. If it were just rated for the layout and for the amount of fun that you should have building it (if there weren't so many problems), it would be 5 stars. But there are several problems that detract from the fun. The first is that while it's implied that you'll be getting everything that you need, you don't get everything you need or even close to it. Expect to spend at least another hundred bucks on tools, glue, extra materials, etc., and that's just with the first kit. You open the box and the first thing in the instructions is that if you want to make it a lot easier on yourself, you also need a low-temp glue gun and glue, a foam cutter, and foam knife. (And of course they're also all made by Woodland Scenics.) Take off a star. The second is that it states that there isn't any dust or mess. I don't think they've ever built one of them, then, because the steps where you apply the plaster cloth are messy and dusty. I had to use a mask while cutting the plaster cloth into the required strips, it was so bad. And I had plaster on my clothes, enough to get my wife upset with me. Take off half a star. The worst problem is that Woodland Scenics got lazy when writing the instructions. The first 2/3 of the booklet are fairly precise with lots of measurements and drawings, and things go easily and smoothly and you have lots of confidence that you're going to have a great looking finished product. Then suddenly your left on your own with generalizations about how to do the remaining steps. They say to "look at the picture on the box" for guidance, but it's really very little help if you've never built a layout before and don't already know what you're doing. Basically you've got to imagine how everything's going to fit together in the end, but if you've never done it before, there's no way to know how it's going to fit together. And reading the rest of the instructions doesn't help. So take off another star and half.If you go into this knowing that you're getting quite a bit less than you're expecting, then it's worth the price. And the price should be around two fifty - anything more and you're paying too much, so look around a little.

5I'd give it a five without hesitation
By G. E. Johnson
I've been around model railroad projects off and on for many years. My interest has been on track layout and wiring for relatively complex plans, but I've never attempted a multi-level layout like this one because of the amount of work involved in planning and purchasing the necessary components. A friend recently bought and built the N-scale 3'x6' layout offered by Woodland Scenics, and when I saw it I was motivated to buy this HO scale layout and give it a go. I am impressed with the thought, care, and planning that has gone in to this product. The instructions are pretty good. They walk you through the project and there are several pictures to illustrate just how things are supposed to be done. Although one might purchase the warm glue gun and hot foam cutting blade, the glue included in the kit and a set of good hobby knives can be used without this added expense. I think the kit would be improved by the inclusion of a video showing the construction steps at the various stages, but with some patience and care, the kit can be assembled by anyone who has good coordination and understanding of spatial relationships. I would also suggest that since they ask you to tentatively assemble the track to be sure that the track paths are going to function correctly, that they ought to include the track as part of the basic package, instead of as an add on item that one can buy later. You need the track to complete this kit correctly, and this is not clear from the advertising information. Is the kit appropriate for beginners? It depends. If you've got five thumbs, you'll probably be disappointed. If you can assemble and kit-bash model railroad cars and buildings, you'll probably have fun with this project.

5Great way to start building a lay9out
By Wesley H. Cowley
This is an excellent kit with which to learn how to build a model train layout. You need some additional tools, such as glue gun and foam cutter. The instructions are for the most part easy to follow and complete. You can also buy the scenery kit and buildings or do it yourself. They claim it's cheaper to buy the scenery kit, but I didn't bother to verify that. The scenery kit has every thing you need in the way of scenery elements without having to run around buying pieces separately. Overall, a good experience building a layout.
